Appendix C: Sample Letter

Dear ________:

My name is __________ and I teach American history at ________ school in _______. I recently received information regarding a Teacher Institute conducted by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation in Williamsburg, Virginia. These institutes are intensive, week-long workshops that immerse participants in early American history "on location" in Williamsburg, the restored capital of 18th-century Virginia.

Participants have the opportunity to exchange ideas with historians, meet character interpreters, and take part in reenactments of 18th-century events. Instructional materials in a variety of media are provided to the teachers for use in their classrooms. Together with Colonial Williamsburg staff, teachers also prepare new instructional materials for use with their students.

The benefits of participation in such an endeavor are far reaching. First the teachers' students are affected by being presented with an instructional program that will enhance their understanding of American history while increasing their critical-thinking skills. Second the community benefits by encouraging young people to embrace a lifetime of learning and civic service. Finally other educators are able to take advantage of the participants' expertise by attending workshops that participants are required to conduct.

I would like to have the opportunity to meet with you to explore the possibility of your supporting my participation in this program. I will call your office within the next two weeks to set up an appointment.

I thank you for considering this request and I look forward to meeting with you. If you have any questions or need additional information at this time, I can be reached at _____.

Sincerely yours,
