The Old Plantation Contributor: The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation
The Old Plantation depicts an enslaved plantation community, circa 1785–1790. It elicits a variety of interpretations about the dance or ceremony represented in the painting. Artist John Rose rendered individual faces, buildings, and objects, as well as percussion and string instruments with origins in West Africa.
