Hemp in Colonial Williamsburg

Tom Green

Many objects used in the Historic Area are still made of hemp and flax material today. We borrowed a few to show you.You can see raw flax - which came from our local gardener, the George Washington tent marquee provided by our Milliner, a wooden bucket with a hemp rope handle- on loan from the Peyton Randolph house, and an assortment of ropes - all collected from the printer, book-binder, and weaver.
